Conquering Foel Goch from Llangwm – A Welsh Nuttalls Adventure

With 188 peaks to climb, the Welsh Nuttalls challenge is no small feat, but each summit brings its own reward. This time, we set our sights on Foel Goch, a quiet yet stunning peak nestled in the heart of Snowdonia’s lesser-travelled hills. Starting from Llangwm, this walk is a fantastic choice for those who enjoy solitude and sweeping views.

The Route from Llangwm

Llangwm, a charming village in the Conwy Valley, serves as an excellent starting point for the ascent. The route follows a mixture of faint tracks, open moorland, and grassy slopes, offering a varied but enjoyable challenge.

The initial part of the walk is a gentle climb through undulating farmland before opening up to the wild and rugged terrain. Navigation can be tricky in places, so a good map and compass (or GPS) are essential, especially in poor weather. As you ascend, the landscape transforms into rolling heather-clad hills, and the views gradually unfold.

Reaching the Summit

At 611 metres, Foel Goch might not be the highest peak on the Welsh Nuttalls list, but it certainly delivers in terms of scenery. The summit is marked by a trig point and offers stunning panoramic views of the Snowdonia range, including the distant Carneddau peaks, Arenigs, and even glimpses of the Clwydian hills on a clear day.

We took a moment here to soak in the crisp winter air and enjoy a well-earned break. The solitude of this peak makes it feel like a hidden gem, far from the well-trodden paths of Snowdonia’s more famous mountains.

The Descent & Final Thoughts

For the descent, we retraced our steps, taking in the landscape from a new perspective. As always, the changing light and weather can dramatically alter the views, making the return journey just as enjoyable as the ascent.

With another Welsh Nuttall ticked off, we marked our progress on our new Welsh Nuttalls Pinboard and print, which we recently launched to help track our climbs. If you’re tackling this challenge yourself, our pinboard is a great way to keep motivated and celebrate each peak conquered.

Plan Your Own Adventure

If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to Snowdonia’s busier routes, Foel Goch from Llangwm is a fantastic choice. It’s a reminder that some of the best hiking experiences come from the lesser-known peaks, where nature feels untouched and truly wild.
