There’s something magical about starting the new year surrounded by the wild beauty of Eryri (Snowdonia), and our walk to Llyn Idwal on New Year’s Day was the perfect way to kick off 2025. Crisp mountain air, stunning scenery, and that unbeatable sense of accomplishment made it a day to remember.

The Journey Begins

It was a wet start to the day, but the sky cleared just in time for our walk. As we arrived at the Ogwen Valley Visitor Centre, the towering peaks of Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach framed the scene, promising an adventure ahead. Bundled up against the chill, we set out on the well-marked path that leads to Llyn Idwal, part of the Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve.

The route is a gentle climb, suitable for most abilities, making it an ideal choice for families and casual walkers. The path winds through rocky terrain, with occasional streams cascading down from the hillsides. As we walked, we paused to take in the views of the Ogwen Falls and the iconic Devil’s Kitchen ridge in the distance.

Reaching Llyn Idwal

After about 30 minutes of steady walking, the breathtaking sight of Llyn Idwal unfolded before us. Nestled in a dramatic glacial bowl, the lake’s glassy surface reflected the surrounding peaks. The tranquility was almost otherworldly, broken only by the sound of the wind brushing against the water and the occasional call of a raven overhead.

We spent time exploring the shores of the lake, marveling at the geological formations that make this area so unique. The legend of Idwal, the young prince after whom the lake is named, adds a touch of mystery to the setting, making it feel steeped in history and lore.

A Pause for Reflection

With the year just beginning, it felt fitting to take a moment of quiet reflection by the water. Surrounded by nature’s grandeur, we thought about the year ahead, our goals, and the adventures we hope to embark on. A thermos of hot coffee and a couple of biscuits added a touch of comfort as we soaked in the atmosphere.

Heading Back

The return journey was just as enjoyable, with the low winter sun casting golden light across the valley. On the way back, we crossed paths with fellow walkers, all sharing smiles and New Year’s greetings. It was a reminder of the camaraderie that comes with exploring the outdoors.
